Abstract: Using data from CFPS and the 6th National Population Census, this paper empirically examines the impact of clan cultural on son preference and women development. Empirical results show than clan culture is significantly correlated with local son preference and women development, as a stronger clan culture leads to a higher sex ratio bias and a larger gender education gap. Using ethnic wars in Song dynasty as instruments for clan culture, the paper further estimates the causal effects of clan culture on sex ratio and education gender gap, and obtains results consistent with our OLS estimation. In the end of this paper, we discuss the role of urbanization and education development in affecting and reshaping China's traditional clan culture.

Key words: sex ratio bias, son preference, clan culture, educational gender gap
