Polluting Firms' Location and Survival

摘要: 本文在"中心-外围"空间结构下,考察污染企业选址位置与存续状态的关系,并解释其背后的经济学动因。研究发现,中心城市环境规制强度的提升恶化了域内污染企业的存续状态。但在市场潜能的抵消作用下,选址位置与存续状态的关系非单调。随着污染企业到中心城市空间距离增加,污染企业存续状态呈倒U型变化。生产效率提升有助于降低污染企业退出风险,并引致倒U型曲线的拐点向中心城市方向偏移。本研究对更好理解和把握污染企业空间分布的演进规律,有的放矢地协调城市间环境规制政策具有参考意义。

Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between the location and survival of the polluting firms' within the centre-periphery spatial structure, as well as explaining the underlying economic motivation. The paper notes that the increasing intensity of environmental regulation in central cities has been worsening polluting firms' survival. However, under the market potential offsetting effect, the relationship between spatial location and survival status is non-monotone. As the spatial distance to central cities grows, the survival curve shows an inverted U-shaped distribution. Meanwhile, improved production efficiency helps reduce the polluting firms' survival risk, causing the inverted U-shaped curve's inflection point to shift towards central cities. The research in this paper contributes significantly to a better understanding of the polluting firms' spatial distribution evolution law and to specifically coordinating environmental regulation policies between central and peripheral cities.
