Abstract:Inspired by the seminal work of Krugman's "new economic geography",many scholars have investigated the origins of economic agglomeration from various viewpoints, including trade cost, expectation, technical progress, and tax rate differences. However, there is little literature analyzing the effect of firm heterogeneity on agglomeration. This paper,by proposing a theoretical model with heterogeneous firms from two regions, two sectors, and two factors, explores whether or not and how productivity heterogeneity of firms affect the agglomeration of manufacturing industry. Our result shows that the increasing productivity dispersion of firms fosters agglomeration of manufacturing labors. This result is verified by an empirical analysis based on the Annual Survey Data of Chinese Industrial Enterprises (above the scale of 5 million Yuan) and the annual prefecture-level macroeconomic data in China.
